Tijuana Flats is Bustin’ into Richmond!

Fast Casual Tex-Mex Restaurant Makes Richmond Debut
Funny story, really. Back in ’95, this college kid, Brian Wheeler, walked into a bar. Actually, a bunch of bars. (And restaurants, too.)
At first, it was just harmless fun. But over time, the good times got the best of him and just going out no longer cut it.
So Brian decided to open his own restaurant despite having never worked in one before (brilliant, right?), and created his own line of hot sauces shortly thereafter – the “Smack My Ass & Call Me Sally” brand, which includes some of the hottest sauces in the world.
In ’99, Brian’s success caught the eye of former restaurant industry hotshot Camp Fitch, who left retirement to become a partner. Since then, Tijuana Flats has grown to more than 130 restaurants in six very lucky states.
Since day one, Tijuana Flats has always given back to the community. In January 2007, the Tijuana Flats Just in Queso Foundation was created to give back even more. Much more. The company has raised over $3,500,00 and donated countless hours, to help those in need.
So remember, success isn’t something you can gain overnight. It’s something you can gain over many nights at college bars.
Opening Highlights
Tijuana Flats knows Virginia is for Lovers. Lovers of tacos, that is. On April 16th, we opened our doors in the shops at Willow Lawn to all of Richmond’s hot sauce aficionados.
Before the opening, the Tijuana Flats staff gave friends and family a sneak peek of the menu which also benefited a great cause! On Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14, guests paid what they wanted for a complimentary meal. All proceeds collected were donated through the Tijuana Flats Just in Queso Foundation to the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Through these training meals alone, about $1,000 was raised. In addition, 20 percent of the sales generated during Tijuana Flats’ Give Back Day on April 21 will be donated to the organization.
At Tijuana Flats, fun is one of our core values. So, what better way to introduce ourselves to Richmond other than hanging a bunch of giant pinatas around town filled with goodies to share? Pinatas shaped like tacos, avocados and other Tex-Mex shapes were stuffed with sunglasses, beer cozies, coupons and candy from the restaurant located at 4925 W. Broad St. Clues from social media and Mix 98.1 helped residents to locate and bust open the pinatas that popped up in locations ranging from VCU and the University of Richmond to the Children’s Museum and Byrd Park.
